John G. Carey spent thirty years in law enforcement before he wrote a book. Tenant Boy, Officer’s Sword is his debut novel and the first volume of a planned trilogy.
John was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1962, the son of Irish immigrants who arrived in the United States in 1958. In 1974 his parents sold their business and moved the family home to County Kildare, Ireland. He was educated at Newbridge College, an all-boys Dominican boarding school.
John came back to the United States in 1982 to work in the thoroughbred racing industry. A chance meeting with mounted patrol officers on the farm changed his direction, and he took the police entrance exam.
His law enforcement career ran thirty years: a decade as a mounted patrol officer and twenty years as a detective. He then spent six years as an instructor at the Department of Criminal Justice Training, teaching future officers.
John’s late father, Gerald, told him the stories of the Irish who crossed the Atlantic and built modern America. He taught his son to respect their labor and sacrifice. The story of Michael O’Sullivan lived in John’s mind for decades. After his father’s passing, he sat down and wrote it.
